Hello! If you're reading this, maybe you're wanting to write things for me for Yuletide.
Here are some thoughts about that.
A.) WRITE WHAT IS IN YOUR HEART. Seriously. I've thrown out some prompts and stuff below but if something else grabs you, please feel free to write it. I want you to have fun and not stress about if you're writing something that is the story of my heart. Write the story of your heart. My most favorite thing about fandom is authors writing what they're passionate about, so if you're on a really big kick of writing your characters as if they're employees at a Tim Hortons or something, then follow your passion.
B.) DON'T BE AFRAID TO GET WEIRD. Epistolary? First person? Second person? Photo essay? The ending isn't happy? The relationship doesn't work? Someone dies at the end? Someone's seeing dead people? Fic is basically the written equivalent of the This Is Fine dog?
Man, just go for it. A quick traipse through my body of work should make it clear that I'm okay with things getting weird. If you've been dying to find an audience for your ghost story or your war story or your fic about a relationship falling apart, well, don't be afraid to try it out on me.
C.) HAVE FUN. Seriously. Please. Enjoy yourself.
D.) GENERAL LIKES. AUs. Spy stories. Historical fiction. Dystopia/apocalypse. Zombies. Survival. World-building. Magical realism. Ghost stories. Horror stories. Time travel.
Coming out. Platonic touching that evolves into non-platonic touching. Found families. Starting over. Unrequited love, forbidden relationships. Fake dating/fake married/marriage of convenience. Poly/open relationships. Consensual infidelity.
Growing up, growing old, moving on.
Also, like: do not feel obligated to write sexytimes stuff. If you want to handwave it, or only write the makeouts, or not write anything at all, that is fine. Not all stories need porn of any level of explicitness, so write what you're comfortable with. If the story that comes to you is a totally gen story, like, please do that.
E.) GENERAL DISLIKES: Mpreg. Kidfic of any kind. Always-a-girl/genderswap/rule 63/whatever you want to call it. A/B/O. Kneeling-verse. Animal cruelty. Bestiality. Animal transformation. Watersports/scat. Torture porn. Infidelity (that isn't already part of canon).
I'd prefer not to read scenes of sexual violence or general violence against women, particularly explicit ones. You have to write fluff or pretend bad things don't happen, but if you really truly need it for a plot point, I'd prefer it not be graphic.
In regards to real heavy kink/BDSM, in case that is a thing that comes up for you. I don't mind reading things that play with dynamics/going a more D/s route with a pairing, but what's important for me is that the dynamic has to have a point. I want to know that these characters care about each other, and if the way they express that is by person A paddling person B until they cry, then great, I just don't want to be left wondering what the motivation is or whether they're both into the same thing or not.
F.) THINGS I REQUESTED
THE OTHER SHORE - MURDER BY DEATH (ALBUM)
The album is available for streaming here on Bandcamp; lyrics are also posted: https://murderbydeath.bandcamp.com/album/the-other-shore
This review/analysis of the album is pretty good: https://www.popmatters.com/murder-by-death-other-shore-2600474878.html
As is this one: http://lamusicblog.com/2018/09/review/on-murder-by-death-and-the-other-shore/
The press release for this album says: "The album is a space-western about a ravaged Earth, its fleeing populace, and a relationship in jeopardy."
Which, like, if I had to pick an album made specifically for me personally, that would be it. Plus it is from a band that I love dearly, so added bonus.
Come on, you know you want to write about a dystopian space western!
The worldbuilding on this album is actually really really great and you could do just about anything with it. Tell me about the narrator, tell me why they're running -- running so far that they're going to space. ("You need me to stay / but alas, I must go.") Tell me about the world. What's out there in space? What does our narrator find when they leave -- and when they come back? This prompt intentionally left vague because I really want you to just take the world MBD sketched out and see where you can take it. I love a) space b) westerns c) dystopias so like, you really can't go wrong with whatever you do.
THE GENTLEMAN'S GUIDE TO VICE AND VIRTUE
I requested Monty and Percy, but please feel free to include Felicity if you see fit. Second, I have only just read the first book and haven't read the novella or sequel. While maybe I will by the time Yuletide is over, I wouldn't count on it. So if you use anything from those, I mean go ahead I guess, but try to be as not-spoilery as possible.
Anyhow, for as much time as I spent just shouting at the book for Percy and Monty to kiss, I am so so good for their endless pining for each other. I'd really like something from Percy's POV, since we see everything from Monty's in canon. I think Percy would be interesting to get into the head of.
Other ideas... modern AU? Or some-other-time-period AU? I'm sure there's probably a ton of these on the archive already but what if this was set in the 20s? The 70s? The future? What if they were on a spaceship together? Are they wizards??
I love missing scenes or backstory and would read thousands of words of Monty being flirtatious and ridiculous with Percy and also being completely oblivious at the same time. Scenes from their pasts to show how Monty developed his feelings for Percy?
In case you may be tempted - while it may be era appropriate, I'd really prefer there be no racial/homophobic slurs in here. And if you're going to touch on the issue of race, I guess just please do it sensitively and with caution? And if you don't think you can do it well, I'm perfectly fine with reading a fic set in a world that doesn't discriminate against Percy. Like, that's fine.
CODE NAME VERITY
I selected Julie and Maddie, although I realized belatedly that all my prompts below are Julie-centric. I'll try to come back to this post later with some Maddie-related thoughts, too, but just suffice it to know that I love both of them and have shed many tears over both of them and would read anything you come up with, if it's just a missing scene from the book or something pre-canon for both/either of them, or whatever.
Some ideas, which you don't have to use:
- Julie before the war. Julie growing up -- if you've read The Pearl Thief, feel free to include any canon you've gleaned from that; if you haven't, feel free to make up what you want.
- Julie on missions during the war. Julie being smarter than her enemies.
- Julie falling in love. Julie pretending to fall in love. Julie realizing too late that she's in love.
Feel free to use any/all other characters from canon as you see fit; I've read all the books so I'm good there. I do very much love Julie/Maddie, and also Julie/Ellen (from the Pearl Thief), and also will gladly read gen or het or whatever you come up with.
