Thoughts go here eventually.
A.) WRITE WHAT IS IN YOUR HEART. Seriously. I've thrown out some prompts and stuff below but if something else grabs you, please feel free to write it. I want you to have fun and not stress about if you're writing something that is the story of my heart. Write the story of your heart. My most favorite thing about fandom is authors writing what they're passionate about, so if you're on a really big kick of writing your characters as if they're employees at a Tim Hortons or something, then follow your passion.
B.) DON'T BE AFRAID TO GET WEIRD. Epistolary? First person? Second person? Photo essay? The ending isn't happy? The relationship doesn't work? Someone dies at the end? Someone's seeing dead people? Fic is basically the written equivalent of the This Is Fine dog?
Man, just go for it. A quick traipse through my body of work should make it clear that I'm okay with things getting weird. If you've been dying to find an audience for your ghost story or your war story or your fic about a relationship falling apart, well, don't be afraid to try it out on me.
C.) HAVE FUN. Seriously. Please. Enjoy yourself.
D.) GENERAL LIKES. AUs. Spy stories. Historical fiction. Dystopia/apocalypse. Zombies. Survival. World-building. Magical realism. Ghost stories. Horror stories. Time travel.
Coming out. Platonic touching that evolves into non-platonic touching. Found families. Starting over. Unrequited love, forbidden relationships. Fake dating/fake married/marriage of convenience. Polyam/open relationships. Consensual infidelity.
Growing up, growing old, moving on.
Also, like: do not feel obligated to write sexytimes stuff. If you want to handwave it, or only write the makeouts, or not write anything at all, that is fine. Not all stories need porn of any level of explicitness, so write what you're comfortable with. If the story that comes to you is a totally gen story, like, please do that.
E.) DO NOT WANT: Mpreg. Kidfic of any kind. Always-a-girl/genderswap/rule 63/whatever you want to call it. A/B/O. Kneeling-verse. Animal cruelty. Bestiality. Animal transformation. Watersports/scat. Torture porn. Infidelity (that isn't already part of canon).
I'd prefer not to read scenes of sexual violence or general violence against women, particularly explicit ones, that go beyond what's in the given canon. You don't have to write fluff or pretend bad things don't happen, but if you really truly need it for a plot point, I'd prefer it not be graphic.
In regards to real heavy kink/BDSM, in case that is a thing that comes up for you. I don't mind reading things that play with dynamics/going a more D/s route with a pairing, but what's important for me is that the dynamic has to have a point. I want to know that these characters care about each other, and if the way they express that is by person A paddling person B until they cry, then great, I just don't want to be left wondering what the motivation is or whether they're both into the same thing or not.
New for 2020! Except in limited circumstances/specific prompts below, I would prefer not to read about COVID-19, people getting sick/dying of COVID, general COVID related sadness/anxiety, etc. I am okay with broader more fictionalized pandemic/illness situations ("everyone gets food poisoning that turns them into zombies", etc.)
Letterkenny
Nominated characters: Wayne, Reilly, Jonesy
I am okay with you writing a fic with the three of them, or just fic centered on one of them. Here are some ideas for any combination of prompts.
- Wayne's always unlucky in love - does he finally figure out that the solution to his problems is right in front of his face? Does he decide to just stop trying to date - realizes his life is fulfilling as it is? Does Wayne wake up one day and think "but what if I'm NOT straight" and then just bullies his way through the situation to figure it out?
- What made Wayne the way he is? Would love seeing backstory fic of anything set before the start of the show. We learn so little about his and Katy's past.
- I didn't love the fact that the storyline with Marie-Fred ended with her cheating on Wayne, that felt really forced to me. Can you envision another way that storyline ends?
- Wayne has a problem that only Reilly and Jonesy can solve. (Or vice versa.) How do they come to an understanding to solve the problem? (Ideas: save the farm? fundraise for the hockey team? Reilly and Jonesy's ridiculous Jeep breaks down somewhere? Reilly/Jonesy need a favor from Letterkenny's best fighter?) If you want to take this in a shippy direction, I am into that.
- Something Wayne does goes viral and he needs the youths to explain it to him.
- Some sort of AU where Reilly/Jonesy do make it in hockey and get out of Letterkenny. How do their lives change after going pro?
- Everyone knows Reilly and Jonesy are dating except for Reilly and Jonesy. Hilarity ensues.
- I am a huge hockey person so really anything that brings in the hockey world to the story, I am all for. (The "Erie Otters" joke had me absolutely dying, for example.)
Obviously feel free to include anyone else from the cast who you think would fit or really desperately want to write about. I especially love Tanis and her on-again/off-again everything with Wayne.
Portrait of a Lady on Fire
Nominated Characters: Heloise, Marianne
oh my god fix it fic? I totally understand why the movie ended the way it did and I love the film's vision of yes, this really is it for them, this wasn't an era where you could just, you know, find each other again super easily, but I just desperately want something where queer women are happy and in love and get to stay that way
a modern AU? i feel like this would be really ambitious but I would be interested to see it. How do their roles translate to the present day? Is Marianne a photographer, perhaps? Or is she still a painter -- fine art portrait painters are still a thing, after all! How does their story change if they live in a world where there's social media and texting and things to bridge the gap of distance, even if Heloise does still have to go off to live a life she doesn't want to live in?
Any sort of stolen moment in time/missing scene from the film.
Brunch (Podcast)
Nominated characters: DJ Bean, Pete Blackburb
Love me some dysfunctional man children! Possible ideas:
- DJ is a deeply sensitive indie musician; Pete is the journalist/blogger/whatever who is covering the rise of his career
- Any sort of fake dating/there's only one bed sort of scenario
- I know this didn't happen but listen: Pete has to go to The Bubble to cover hockey. DJ is left behind. How do they cope? (This is maybe the only exception to my "I don't want stories about the COVID Times" DNW.)
- I am a sucker for any story where the narrative is "young-ish people growing up and learning to adult"; Pete and DJ both seem to be stuck in that murky late-20s/early-30s no-man's-land of "I'm an adult but I still feel very much like a kid". Do they face some sort of big challenge or adversity, do they fight on their podcast, does one of them take a joke a bit too far, and how do they come out better on the other side of it?
- Both Pete and DJ are very much "I mean I'm totally straight but also that guy is hot" kinds of guys. What happens when one of them, or, you know, ideally, both of them, realizes that maybe they're not as straight as they thought? How do they navigate that?
- DJ in makeup. That's it, that's the prompt.
- I don't know anything about video games but I'd read the AU where they're esports guys rather than podcasters.
Will Darling Adventures
Nominated characters: Will, Kim, Phoebe, Maisie
I stayed up far too late reading these books and was just immediately enamored with the relationship between Will and Kim, and how vibrant and lovely I found Phoebe and Maisie. I'm holding out judgment until the last book but this may be my new favorite KJC series. Kim and Will are very well-matched against each other in terms of giving as good as they get. I love that it's not an easy origin story for them, that they have shit to work through before they get to even a "happily for now", let alone a "happily ever after." And I'm absolutely a sucker for a good old damaged veteran/damaged spy kind of story, honestly.
I would be delightfully happy with fic about any combination of the four nominated characters - Kim, Will, Phoebe, and Maisie. Some ideas, here:
- Backstory for any/all of the characters!
- Phoebe and Maisie go and live their best high fashion dreams. What adventures do they get up to? Do they lead a wild, artistic existence or do they just settle down and get to work? (Do they become more than friends?)
- I feel like this could be made into a modern AU fairly easily - a mob/organized crime story? computer hackers? Will comes back from Vietnam, Kim never served, Phoebe and Maisie are like, first wave feminists? Will Darling Adventures in Space??? The sky is the limit!
- Something set after the end of the second book: Kim settling down into the life of a bookseller. Does he kind of strain against the trappings of a more mundane life? How does he balance his very large personality with a very quiet job?
- I don't have a prompt for it but I am absolutely open to the idea of an OT4 or some kind of polyam relationship between them all. (Do Phoebe and Maisie come back from abroad even more ~*~modern~*~ than Will and Kim had expected?)
